Our sustainability work continues
We are actively developing Leipurin sustainability work and continuing our journey of sustainable development, which Leipurin has been on since our foundation in 1917.
For a long time, our focus has been especially on food safety, reducing waste, supplier evaluations and developing a responsible product assortment.
Now, along with recent regulation and customer needs we are actively working on CSDR, Scope 3 emission calculation and deforestation regulation.
Sustainability and regulation
Measures to address CSRD
- As part of Aspo, Leipurin is covered by the European Union's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and will report on sustainability issues as part of Aspo's sustainability report.
- The EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is a regulation that obliges companies to report on their environmental, social and governance (ESG) impacts. The purpose of the CSRD is to improve the transparency and comparability of corporate sustainability information so that investors, analysts, consumers and other stakeholders can better assess the sustainability performance of companies and the related business risks. In accordance with the requirements set by the directive, Aspo is one of the companies covered by the first phase.
- Leipurin's work towards meeting the requirements of the Directive has progressed rapidly during 2024, and the basis for the development work has been created by the double materiality analysis carried out in 2023. The process assessed the impacts of the company's operations on the environment and society, as well as the environmental and societal impacts on the company, based on which the most relevant sustainability themes for Leipurin's operations were obtained, which we reported on. During 2024, we worked to meet the CSRD reporting requirements and calculated all our scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions for 2023 for the first time, as well as the emissions for 2024 at the beginning of this year.
- Our goal for 2025 is to develop emission calculations. In the first phase, we have calculated the emission factors of the products we supply at the product category level, and this year we intend to develop the calculation towards product-specific emission factors for the products with the largest volumes.
Commitment to the SBTi
- As part of the Aspo Group, Leipurin has joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) at the end of 2024.
- The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body that enables companies to set ambitious emission reduction targets in line with the latest climate science. It aims to accelerate companies around the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050. The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the commitments of the We Mean Business Coalition.
- The science-based emission reduction targets aim to limit global warming to 1.5°C in line with the Paris Agreement. The goal for 2025 is to create and set emission reduction targets that will guide sustainability and emission reduction work in the coming years.

Preparing for the Deforestation Regulation
- The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) aims to prevent products related to deforestation and forest degradation from entering the EU market. The regulation applies to, among other things, palm oil, soy, wood, coffee, cocoa and rubber, as well as products derived from them. Operators must ensure that the products do not originate in areas that have recently been deforested and that they comply with the laws of the country of origin. The entry into force of the Forest Decree was postponed by 12 months and will enter into force on 30 December 2025. The postponement of implementation will give businesses and authorities more time to prepare for the requirements of the regulation and ensure that all necessary measures can be taken appropriately.
- Leipurin has started preparing to implement the obligations set by the EUDR Regulation as a trader (SME). Comprehensive instructions have been made on the implementation of the EUDR requirements and we are currently exploring practical implementation options to meet the obligations.
